You can choose either MAU or notification as the metric to track your metered billing usage. If you choose notification based billing, you will be billed only for your notification usage. If you choose MAU, you will be billed only for your MAU usage. We give you this option to make sure you get to choose the lowest pricing. You can decide based on what is lowest for your business. Some products have less number of users but high volume of notifications. So they will get better pricing with the MAU billing model.

Each plan includes certain number of units of notifications or MAU (based on the billing component you choose). If you go beyond the limit, you will be charged at the mentioned overage unit. This helps you avoid the need of switching to the next tier and pay huge upfront costs. For example, consider that you are on the Standard 10K Notifications plan and you have 10K notifications included in the plan. On the second month, you sent 11K notifications. You will be charged $2 for the extra 1000 notifications you sent on that month. So, instead of having to upgrade to the next higher plan (which might cost more than $100/mo), you can simply pay the overage fee for the month.

MAU (Monthly Active User) is a user on your app who receives notification or be active atleast once in a billing month. MAU resets to zero after every billing month. Notification is the request to the send notification to an individual user. We don't count the number of channels through which the notification is delivered. For example, if you trigger a notification to a user who has enabled email, sms and in-app, your notification usage is one, instead of three.

Minimum billable unit for notification is 1000, and for MAU it is 10. That means, even if your overage is just 100 notification, you will be billed for the whole unit (ie: 1000 notifications) at $2, or $.25 depending on standard/premium plan. Likewise, for MAU, even if you have only 1 MAU as extra usage, you will be billed for 10MAUs at $1 or $1.25 depending on the plan.
